about

In Progphonic, the EP from Electrotype, the powerful contralto voice of multi-instrumentalist Beth Maplesden is quieted temporarily in favor of purely instrumental progressive rock. This release concentrates mainly on the symphonic aspects of the genre once known, in its earliest days, as classical rock. The tracks blend prog idioms from the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s with romantic and modern orchestral influences. The album transitions to more groove-oriented funk rock in the second half, while synthesizers do the singing over sonorous bass pedal synthesizer, and melancholy electric guitar, among other instruments. The instrumental-only version of 2016's "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is included here as well, and has only been available previously on special promotional releases.
